Galen and the Gateway to Medicine
We know about Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. But we owe nearly as much to Galen, a physician born in 129 A.D. at the height of the Roman Empire. Galen’s acute diagnoses of patients, his botanical wisdom and studies of physiology were recorded in numerous books, handed down through the Middle Ages and Renaissance. He developed sports medicine, doctoring gladiators. Not least, Galen passed on the medical tradition of respect for life. In this fascinating biography for young people, Jeanne Bendick brings Galen’s Roman world alive with the clarity, humor, and outstanding content we enjoyed in Archimedes and the Door to Science. An excellent addition to schools, libraries, and homes; ideal for home education.
A fun book for children where Triangles, Circles and Rectangles (who all live in different towns) learn to work together to make new shapes and pictures. They learn that they are much better together. Cute presentation. Drawings and shapes.
This is a great old children’s book with a terrific message. As well as teaching and working with shapes and colors, it teaches the children to overlook differences and see the potential for new, exciting experiences.

High and Mighty chronicles the dangerous rise of the SUV. The Sports Utility Vehicle has taken over America’s roads. What does that mean? These gas guzzling, unsafe vehicles, says author Keith Bradsher, are much worse than cars for the safety of their occupants, other motorists, pedestrians and the planet. A scathing indictment against the manufacturers – and the public. Both, he says have combined to create a highway “arms race” that puts us all in danger. Read it and weep.
